Review – Speak of the Devil by J.M. Gregoire

Taken from Goodreads...
Taken from Goodreads…

Nearly half a year has passed since Asmodeus opened the gateway allowing an unknown number of demons to spill onto our plane of existence. A fatal standoff has left Dez on her own to hunt the stray demons down and send them back to Hell where they belong. Her life has become a never-ending cycle of violence and bloodshed, further tainted by a deepening depression and a longing for the person she had to leave behind.

When Dez receives an unexpected phone call, she makes her way to the northern Arizona desert to see an old friend. Upon arrival, there is a message waiting for her from beyond the grave, and she realizes before she can go any further, she must face the one thing she’s been dreading for months. To make matters worse, the message is meant to help her mission, but it forces Dez into an impossible choice.

Only Dez can decide which road to take, but will she be able to handle the consequences of her decision?

659px-4_Star.svg

Where to even begin…we pick up 6 months after the events from The Devil You Know and things aren’t looking to good for Dez. She’s lonely and her days and nights consist of dealing with the escaped demons from the gateway. She’s missing Vegas and wondering why he hasn’t called. Through all that Dez gets a call from an old friend requesting her presence straight away…A few new characters are introduced, some I loved while others I wanted to punch in the face.

We see some other old faces and when things seem to be falling into a semblance of routine Dez and Vegas are blindsided by a face all thought was dead…I don’t want to give away too many details but it was a rollercoaster ride of touch and go emotions for a bit. I will say some great developments were had and I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment in this unique series…we hear some hard truths from some of the lies that were being told.

There is an array of new information and I’m curious of what will become of it. But through it all Vegas and Dez are strong as ever together and I look forward to what their new abilities will bring to the table. Make sure you check out Burning, The Devil You Know, and Suffering before Speak of the Devil hits retailers later this month 🙂

Blog Tour + Review – Trail of Dead by Cristy Rey

The Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for the Incarnate…only she doesn’t know it.

Trail of Dead (Incarnate #2)

Cristy Rey

Goodreads

The Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for the Incarnate…only she doesn’t know it.

Burned out from being on the road again, a directionless Sunday finds herself inexplicably drawn to Salt Lake City. There she finds herself in a curious state. For the first time in her life, Sunday feels normal. She can walk around free of anxiety that she will be set-off by her inhuman sensitivity. She can be intimate without overheating. Are the days of the Incarnate finally behind her?

Cyrus has not handled losing Sunday well. For eight months, the werewolf has been a shadow of himself. His pack is concerned and his closest friend, Marcus, believes that Cyrus is in danger of being lost to his humanity. When their Alpha confesses that the Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for Sunday, Cyrus goes into full-gear trying to get her out of it…but he has to find her first.

5-red-stars

I put off reading this for as long as I could because I knew once I did it would be over too fast…and I was right!Last night I jumped in with both feet and hit the door running. This was everything I’d hoped for plus a bit more. We were introduced to a few new characters and were taken on a ride to crazy town. Sunday is feeling better than she’s ever felt before but it’s more than that. She’s walked head first into a trap and will she realize it in time or will things happen that she has no control over.

Cyrus is going crazy without Sunday and his wolf is on edge. Marcus (LOVE HIM) is beside himself with worry and willing to do anything to help Cyrus back from the brink of insanity.

So much was going on in this book and a few questions where answered but a few more remain. I’m so ready for Wolf Parade it’s not even funny…

Once again I NEED MORE MARCUS!!!!!!!

Also the bond is cute that Angel has with new character Dani I’m curious of how it plays out.

Excerpt #1

With a sharp nod to Cyrus, Stephen took a step back and again made his way to his seat. Cyrus claimed the seat Marcus vacated, muscles taut and ready to spring into action. It took everything to abate the firestorm that brewed in him. The loss of Sunday, a threat to Marcus, and the rising wolf that threatened to take over if Cyrus didn’t get himself in check.

“I think Marcus appreciates the situation.”

“Do you, Marcus?” Stephen asked. The younger wolf now stood with his hands in his pockets and his head lowered, refusing to direct his gaze to his leader.

“I do, Stephen, but, respectfully, I think it doesn’t matter.”

“What makes you think you can find her and, even if you did, the Incarnate would go with you willingly?”

“She came with us willingly before.”

“But she didn’t come with you willingly the last time, and correct me if I’m remembering things wrong, but you statedthat time she put you on your ass and turned the lights out on you for an entire day to prove just how unwilling she was to be recaptured.” Stephen leaned up on his elbows and shifted forward in his chair. “You think you cannot only find her this time, but get her to agree to going with you? Because, Cyrus, I want to be clear on this. She’s going to have to come with you for this to work.”

Cyrus nodded, and Stephen asked Marcus the same question.

“I don’t think it’s going to be that easy,” Marcus admitted. “But I think it’s worth attempting. At the very least, it gives Cyrus another shot with her, and I’m not sure he’ll stay with us long unless he gets at least that.”

The situation was clear. He’d been volatile since she’d absconded and left him behind, and only by confronting her could the situation be resolved. Cyrus wouldn’t be the first werewolf to leave behind humanity and choose to live out his days in wolf form. Once he made that fateful decision, his humanity would be lost forever. He wouldn’t come back. No one did. He would live out his days in the wild and he would do so in misery, alone.

“Is that accurate?” Stephen asked. There was no mistaking to whom he directed the question.

“Yes,” Cyrus answered.

The word stewed in the room while the three men quietly considered what it meant. Cyrus’s admission was deeply felt, and Stephen sighed heavily and brought his hands to cover his face, shaking his head and mumbling unintelligibly into them.

“So what do you want me to do?”

“I want a meeting with the cult leaders,” Cyrus replied.

Dropping back against the chair, he tucked his chin, beard brushing over chest. All the possible consequences of this action played out in his mind. He might not have admitted it to Marcus, even after Marcus had made his intentions known, but he’d fantasized about the millions of ways he could find Sunday again. Finally, he was opening up about them with Stephen, possibly the only person who could enable their reality.

“The cult has ceased all contracts regarding the capture and retrieval of the Incarnate.”

“Why?” Marcus asked, now inching closer to the table where the two men sat.

“Like I said earlier, Cyrus is the best and everyone knows it. He was the most dedicated to the Incarnate’s case and he is the one with the most experience with her. Since the witch’s flock was all but exterminated when she destroyed the main house, information about her is in short supply.”

“What does the cult know about Sunday that we don’t?” Cyrus interjected.

“Good question,” Stephen admitted with a nod. “It is my understanding that the Pastophori has found another way of trapping her.”

Excerpt #2

Despite the dark sunglasses, Sunday squinted into the glare as she pulled off the highway, heading into the Salt Lake City limits.

Through the years, Sunday’s frequent stops along the map of the continental United States had been little more than happenstance. She’d drive aimlessly in any given direction and perchance spot a skyline along the way that she wanted to investigate further. If it suited her interests, she would stay on a little longer wherever it was she found herself. Generally, she’d remain for no more than a few months at a time. Until she stumbled into Columbia, where she thought, so stupidly, that she could retire from her endless journeying.

After a couple of days in a no-name Kansas town, getting to SLC became Sunday’s sole ambition. There had been no guiding light or neon sign goading her. For some reason or no reason at all, the notion popped into Sunday’s mind over a mediocre breakfast at a random roadside diner.

Reason or not, Sunday took some comfort in, for the first time in a long time, having a direction. As soon as the signs started reading this many miles to Salt Lake City, she started humming the mantra: There are so few miles left. I’ll get there soon. Her rest stops became less frequent, and excitement acted as her body’s own stimulant. No need for sleep; she would rest when she got there. Another roadside sign and the miles to Salt Lake were fewer than they’d been before, three digits knocked down to two.

There are so few miles left. I’ll get there soon.

Each time, the smile on her face grew larger. SLC was her future, and the closer she got, the further her past became until it was a hardly a flicker on her subconscious.

Taking Back Sunday (Incarnate #1)

Goodreads

After five years on the run, Sunday has finally settled into a seemingly normal life in Columbia, South Carolina. What her two best friends don’t know is that Sunday has a secret past. She is the Incarnate, a conduit of mystical energy transcendent of the mundane and the divine. For most of her life, she served under Bernadette, the most powerful witch in the Northwest. Her power is terrifying, and what she remembers of her past—and what she doesn’t—haunts her. In the year that she’s been attempting to be anything but the Incarnate, Sunday has fought her abilities tooth and nail, but it’s been worth it. When Sunday joins her friends’ coven for an innocent gathering, Sunday discovers a darkness hidden beneath the blanket of the coven’s magic and she is determined to find out who is behind it and what she has planned.

For the last four years, Cyrus has been the point man on the contract to recapture the Incarnate and deliver her to the Pastophori of Iset. A gifted tracker and a fearless werewolf, he harbors a wild, inexplicable passion for the Incarnate that has driven him to hunt her. He was one of the original captors that brought her to Bernadette when his obsession with her began. Having found her, Cyrus and his pack find themselves torn between two objectives: take her by force and deliver her to yet another group of fanatics, or help her uncover the traitor among her coven.

Tomorrow starts the official week long blog tour for my third book Dark Indiscretions: A Prequel… 19 blogs have signed up but I figured I’d kick the tour off first 🙂

“A friendship forged out of necessity

A bond broken and turned into hatred

One once looked at as a brother

The other loved to much and too soon”

James Johnston and Kain O’Grady once had a bond like no other ever seen before. Not only were they brothers of the heart, they were also lovers.

Centuries they spent at each other’s side. Through good times and through bad, but never did their relationship suffer until one pregnancy and one prophecy changes their lives forever.

Betrayal is seen at every corner and madness close behind.

Excerpt #1

James didn’t know what to say to comfort Kain so he just said nothing. He let his body talk for him. He turned his body around so he was facing Kain and looked into his honey-colored eyes and felt something he couldn’t explain. His eyes traveled down Kain’s face and settled on his lips. He remembered that kiss just before he died. He wanted to feel Kain’s lips on his again. He moved his hands to run up Kain’s chest.

“What are you doing?” came Kain’s breathy inquire.

“Shh,” was all James said in reply.

He brought his lips to Kain’s again and this time pressed more firmly. He hadn’t a clue what he was doing but whatever it was he needed more. He felt not only himself but Kain’s hardness. He moved himself to straddle Kain’s thighs and let out a groan when their penises came in contact with each other. He wrapped his arms around Kain’s neck and felt Kain’s arms around his waist, pulling him closer. Locking them together more firmly. He started to rock his hips slowly and heard Kain’s breath catch in his throat, followed by a small growl.

Their kisses were becoming sloppier and more hurried. James started to rock his hips a little faster. He didn’t know what either of them needed but he just knew he needed to go faster. Kain’s lips left his to suck on his neck. He could feel the scrap of his fangs and it only served to make him moan louder. Water was sloshing all about as their thrusts grew quicker and their breathing harsher. He could fill tingling all over his body and his claws begin to curl out from his fingers. Whatev

er they were doing felt wonderful and he never wanted it to stop. Kain kept nibbling and sucking on his neck and had even removed one of his arms to fist his hand in James’s hair. Suddenly Kain pulled James’s head back and struck. His fangs embedded deeply into his neck and before James knew what was happening a shout was escaping his throat as thick ropes of fluid left his body through his penis. Kain experienced the same sensation.

Kain took his fangs out of James’s neck and bared his own flesh. Seconds later he felt pleasure unlike anything else when James pulled blood from his neck. Whatever they had just done would have to be repeated as many times as they could. Next time he would make sure to stretch it out, though. He vaguely remembered James licking on his neck before sleep took him from not only the shock of James’s second death but the sensations his body had just experienced. He was fairly certain that James had fallen asleep as well. The only thought he had was that it was going to be freezing in the bath when they awoke.

Excerpt #2

James looked up from the dirt piles he was playing with at the sound of someone shuffling up the valley. The midday sun was hot, blinding him with its light. Through the sunbeams, a small boy ambled to where James knelt in the dirt. He had never seen this boy before and James was wary. Mystics were the top of the food chain, and his father would kill him if he let someone get the better of him. It didn’t matter that he was only six or that the boy appeared smaller than him. It wouldn’t do to be taken by surprise by this stranger. He stood, baring his tiny fangs.

“Who are you? Why have you come here?” James growled, voice tinny but fierce. Even at six, he was a trained killer.

“My name is Kain. Our parents were talking down towards camp. They said you were here playing. I asked if I could come join you, so here I am.” Kain’s tiny hands curled to his side and his head cocked.

“Are you new here?” James asked, fangs still visible. He wasn’t ready to retract them just yet.

“Yes, we walked about two weeks time to get to this part of the hillside,” Kain said. “Would it be alright if I played with you?”

James eyed the strange boy suspiciously.

“Are you a Mystic, too?”

Kain smiled, his top lip pulling back to reveal his own set of small, pearly fangs.

“You don’t have a sister?” James asked.

“No. It’s just me.”

“Me too! Want to be bestest friends?” James withdrew his fangs at this unprecedented prospect.

“Yes!” Kain shouted while bouncing up and down, hands waving wildly.

“Good. We will be friends forever and ever.” James said with confidence.

To secure their blood bond forever, the two boys each nicked the tips of their forefingers with their fangs until blood bubbled at the slight wounds. When their bloody fingertips touched, an instant, unbreakable bond was sealed. They would be best friends forever, even as long as they both still lived and even passing into death. A bond between two Mystics could very well last forever. If nothing came between them, then James and Kain could be blood bound for an eternity.

EXCERPT FROM WOUNDED:
“You don’t think that all of the disasters that humanity has faced were all natural, do you? The bubonic
plague is a good example. It was blamed on a number of things. Rats, the Jewish people, punishment
from God. It all led to a cleansing of anything unusual. Mostly supernaturals, who were trying to blend in,
and in that process the humans wiped out many of their best defenders against the demon population,
which then went on to spread the plague across the world. But that is just one example.”
“What was the point though, wouldn’t the demons have wanted people to be alive so they could
possess them?” Liam asked.
Erik gave a ruthful smile. “Yes and no. The bubonic plague wasn’t so much about killing people off, as
it was infecting them. Making them weak and easier to possess. The plague compromised their immune
systems, allowing them to be taken over. Especially the young.”
Something about what Erik said sent a twang through my brain. I struggled to put the pieces together
that floated just out of reach. Damn it. Liam touched my arm. “What?”
I closed my eyes and pressed my palms into them, blocking out any light. “Just let me think for a
minute.”
The feel of the night air and the sound of the fountain filled my ears as I looked at the pieces one by
one.
Demons escaped in London who bred fast.
Minor supernaturals were being possessed by lesser demons and evil spirits.
Packs of Orion’s demons were free to cause chaos.
The only thing we were missing was a plague and then Orion would have access to all the young
people he wanted. The urge to vomit swelled up through my stomach and burned the back of my throat.
“Children are normally hard to possess, aren’t they?” That was why it had taken a full pentagram
when the black coven was trying to have India possessed so many months ago. At least, that was what I
understood.
Bert bobbed his head. “Yes, it can be very difficult to possess a child. There is a natural protection
over the young when it comes to demons, something the elementals put into play.” He grimaced as he
said ‘elemental’ and again I wondered at these particular supernaturals that I’d only just been hearing
about. “But when the small humans are ill, that protection goes into keeping them alive, rather than
keeping them from being possessed.”
Feeling like a bully, but not really caring, I leaned in to Bert. “How did the bubonic plague really start?”
An interesting thing happened. Bert paled and shook his head. “I can’t tell you.”
My eyebrows shot up and I glanced at Erik. “You want to make him talk, or do you want me to make
him talk?”
Erik shrugged. “Either way is fine. I haven’t interrogated a demon in years. I’ve missed it.”
Bert paled even more and his lower lip trembled. “I can’t tell you. I can’t. Tracker, Slayer both of you
have to trust me. Please.”
“Begging will get you nowhere, little demon.” Erik growled. He had a short, serrated knife in his hand
that he’d pulled from somewhere within his robes. It was curved, like a skinning knife, and if it hadn’t
been for the rough edges that’s what I would have called it.
“Track demons and evil spirits.” Bert blurted out as he fell to his knees. “Proof I am on your side. Track
them; you’ll see it isn’t me fooling you.”
Erik paused and looked over at me. “Up to you. Personally, I’d just as soon dice him up.”
“Fuck, why not, Tracking will take me two seconds.” I grumbled.
I send out a thread to Track demons as a whole, paired with a thread for evil spirits, just to satisfy—
Holy. Fucking. Hell.
I swayed on my feet and went to one knee, the overwhelming wash of pings I got back seriously
making me re-think getting out of bed the day before.
We were surrounded by Orion’s minions.
Hundreds of them.

Excerpt #1

My house looked the same as when I left it, but when I got up to the door, I could feel there was

a change in the atmosphere. The feeling was unexplainable, but I knew there was someone in the

house. My gun was in my harness, so I pulled it out. Slowly, I unlocked the door, kicking it open to startle

whoever was waiting inside. Nothing happened. I moved in, looking in all directions. Frowning when I

didn’t see anything, I pointed the gun over toward my sofa, where two people sat, looking comfortable.

One was a good-looking guy with sandy blond hair and green eyes that appeared to be amused with my

entrance.

“Hey! That’s my vacation popcorn, jerk!” I glared at him as he munched from the bowl I just had

the night before. Did he pick that shit up off the floor?

The guy grinned and slowly popped another piece in his mouth. “Never had it with chocolate

before. It’s not bad.”

Next to him was a woman that was clearly not amused with how we were interacting. She wore

her blond hair back in a high ponytail, her makeup done in a way that screamed dominatrix or psycho

bitch. She snatched the popcorn bowl away from the man and set it on the table. Her nails were long

and sharp, painted blood red. What stood out the most about her was that she was dressed in all black

leather. Not something I would do, but since she had a great body, the woman was able to pull it off.

With me, I’d be walking funny as I made noises from the leather.

“Put the gun down, Jacey.” She looked down at her nails like she was bored with me already.

Hello, I have a gun!

“I don’t follow orders.” I say, shrugging. Damn Trent for not following me home.

Men were such assholes sometimes. It was ridiculous!

Nodding, the guy put his feet up on my coffee table, his shit kickers not even close to clean.

“Hey, I bought that off a military guy who got it from Germany.” I went over and kicked his boots off.

“Respect my shit. You’re worse than a kid.”

The woman looked over at her partner. “Knock it off, you can flirt later.”

“This is flirting? Crap, I am totally doing it wrong. Breaking into homes and eating their food is a

much better idea!” I acted like I was impressed with the technique.

“My name is Luca Taborn. This bitch is my partner, Casey Banks, and we are here to bring you in

for violating the Shadow code.”

Excerpt #2

After rubbing my eyes, I focus in on a figure standing in the corner of the bedroom. It was Trent,

and his gaze on me seemed suspicious. He looks even better in the light! His tanned skin fit

perfectly with his eyes so blue that they seemed unnatural. They were practically electric and I found

that both beautiful and creepy at the same time. We could get passed that. After we get married, they

will become normal to me. Then there was his bad boy, rock star haircut, which pointed out in several

directions to finally swoop out a little in the front. His hair was dark like I thought it was, almost like a

dark brown, but closer to black. He looked every bit of the bad boy that I thought him to be. The man

always seemed to have an intense look about him, and the shadowy beard he now sported only

enhanced it.

Smiling what I considered my sexy smile, I said, “So did we um-“ I did the hand motions of what

kids learned in school meant humping.

His eyes widened, either in shock or disgust.

I frowned. “What? Am I the ugly coyote?”

Trent shook his head, wiping a hand over his face that was clearly showing signs of stubble. My

head tilted to the side as I heard his hand move over the scruff. It made my stomach flip, in a good way.

“We did not have sex.” He grumbled.

Throwing my hands up in the air, I glared. “Seriously? You can’t do this when we get married. I

have to get laid at least twice a day. Sometimes more. We can use the breastfeeding room at my

office.”

“We aren’t going to get married.”  He made a face. “And the breastfeeding room? That is

just wrong.”

Winking, I smiled. “It’s just a room. It has a cot. It will work.”

Excerpt #3

Shrugging, I eyed him as he continued to circle me. Was he the tiger and I, his prey?

“I am also a Shadow, your enemy.”

“There is that.” He stopped in front of me, a hand coming up to touch my face. I let him. I should

have flipped out and tried to bite his hand or something, but I wanted to be touched. By someone.

Anyone. “I can tell you are different, though.”

The way he said it made me feel like someone actually believed in me.  No one in my life

ever took me seriously, yet here was this beautiful man standing in front of me, saying all the right

things. His eyes were a brilliant blue, and reminded me of one of those summer days without a cloud in

the sky. “How do you know?”

Evander leaned forward, his lips brushing over mine. My whole body shivered, causing my knees

to go weak. He put an arm around my waist. “I can tell because the power I feel rolling off of you is

unlike anything I have felt before. There have been stories about a beautiful woman who would lead the

hunters-”

That could be anyone,” I whisper, his lips hardly an inch away.

“No, I am pretty sure that you are the one.” Finally, his lips connect with mine, his arms

wrapping me against him. I respond instantly to him, my desire building. All I wanted to do was rip his

clothes off. It was like prom night all over again, when I tried to make Daniel Hawkins lose his virginity to

me. I know that usually happens the other way around with the guy trying to get the girl to put out. But

hey, girls have needs, too.

My mind went blank when his fingers lightly grazed the small of my back, making heat rise in me

so fast I was having a hard time standing up. He felt me responding, so he went for my shirt. I helped

him, letting it drop to the floor. As his eyes traveled my body, I didn’t feel as insecure as I usually did. I

actually felt beautiful to him. Powerful in my own way. Then his eyes landed on my tattoos. He used a

gentle finger to touch them, going around to my back. He kissed my neck. “My Queen. You have the

markings.”

I was too into the feeling of him touching me to respond intelligently. He came back around and

kissed my neck on the opposite side, then lowered to my collar bone. “Have dinner with me.” He said.

I laughed, breathlessly. “Didn’t we just do that?”

Evander flashed me another smile. “Not properly. I want to show you that I am more than a

man who wants sex.” He took a deep breath as if trying to control himself, his hands rubbing up my

sides. “It will be hard, but I will stop myself, for now.”

Smiling back at him, I touch the skin on his stomach by putting my hands under his shirt. “As

long as we can come back to your place afterwards.”
