Author Interview – Shakuita Johnson

Did a little interview and thought I’d also post it here! If you want to know anything else about me or my writing check out my Facebook or Author Website!

What’s your favourite part of the lifestyle of an Author?

Writing the words…taking the movie reel that’s playing in my head and putting it down on paper as best I can to capture every moment and detail.

What made you start writing?

I started writing in middle school. I started with poems…they were my escape and a way to express myself.

Is there an Author that you consider your inspiration?

I have many but the early authors would be Anne Rice, Christopher Pike, VC Andrews, and RL Stine…they are who I read the most growing up.

What’s your number one tip for an aspiring Author?

Do you research and don’t settle for less than what you want. At the end of the day it’s your name that’s going on your published work. If you’re not happy with something speak up and change it. Also having a great team behind you to help motivate and inspire you is a plus.

What type of book do you like to read and does this differ from the genre that you prefer to write?

I’m a paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi junky. No this doesn’t differ from my preferred genre to write. The supernatural is where my heart lies.

Which one of your characters would you most like to spend time with?

James… he’s insane, intelligent, and charming. He’s a highly functioning sociopath and I just love his character so much. He loves as hard as he hates.

Which book do you consider a must-read?

Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned…every time I read it I find something new…something I didn’t see before. Plus it’s just beautifully written…from the history of the twins to the origin of the first vampire. It’s my go to book.

If you could live in a book, which one would it be?

Ahhh, that’s a hard one…it would either be Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter or The League series or Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark Series.

Can you sum up your life story in ten words or less?

Even when there was nothing left to give…she did.

What’s exciting you about your next project?

My next project is a YA fantasy… just the story itself is exciting. Plenty of action and holy crap moments. I was excited from the outline and I hope everyone is excited about the finished product.

And finally, you have one quote to be remembered by, what is it?

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

― Stephen R. Covey

Also I will be slowing down on my releases…

I went on a rampage a few days ago..and although I’ve calmed down I still stand by everything I said 100%. The only releases this year will be Blood of the Ancient Gods: The Beginning March 8th and Snap Shot this upcoming May. Not sure when anything else will be released. I will finish the Dark Indiscretions Series. The next book’s first draft is done but it won’t be releasing this year. It will be next year. I’ve been busting my ass for the last few years and I’m in the same place I started. So I’m taking a huge step back. I now see why some only release one book a year and I’m okay with it. I have 20+ stories out and available for purchase and I’ve pushed myself to far and stretched myself thin when I shouldn’t have been. So yes I won’t be quitting completely but I will be scaling down tremendously least my rubber band snaps again.

I have also started doing Sinful Saturdays on my Newsletter every Saturday so make sure you check it out! It’s a chapter every Saturday.

11741311_10203411230281501_1285488581890882426_oToday on the blog we have my bestest friend with a little discussion question…she has also provided her opinion on the matter. Please feel free to join in this amazing discussion…

Discussion Question

If an individual or group was to implement strong, efficient means of promoting unity without referring to racism or discrimination what would that look like in one’s community?

Answer

My initial response would begin by educating the community on what social change is trying to be accomplished so the common goal can be clearly identified so there is no room for miscommunication but can create avenues to enhance different levels of the foundation. I would also gather a census among many different cultures, religion, and targeted populations to see where the immediate need lies within these communities on the micro level so expansion will be apt to happen on the macro level. People like to feel involved and that change will positively influence them which means that the topic needing to be addressed should be experienced/witnessed within all communities. Majority of effective change results in places where the problems are continuous and potentially create chaos or concern for others involved. This process in my opinion will take time but change is constant and is challenging to associate with perfection.

LOST: Motivation

As I work on the rewrite of my first book ever published, in the mist of all that has been thrown my way this summer I’ve lost my motivation. The drive or spark is gone. Not sure if it will even come back. I can’t focus enough to see if the voices are gone, as personal issues have either drowned them out or they’ve gone silent. Either way it sucks. Hell it’s all I can do to muster up the brain and willpower to write this blog post. I’ve taken breaks, I tried to read for clarity, and I’ve even watched a movie or five. Still nada. Zip. Zero. Worse part, I’m not even freaking out about the voices in my head going rouge. I still have a series to finish, a new one to start, and countless other WIPs that have one to three chapters written. Obviously my brain needs this little break from reality and I can only hope once I get my mojo back it will all have been worth it in the end. I really want to be writing but I also don’t want to force out nonsense just to say I am writing. IF that makes sense. This summer has been one of the hardest so far and I can only hope I can hold on to my sanity for the next 5 1/2 weeks until we transition into the fall and school starts back up. Hopefully you writers out there are having better luck than me as I know a lot of you are also participating in NaNo this month as well. Anyways, here’s to August! May you breeze by and September be upon us before you know it!

Is It Fall Yet?

Yes I know we had a crappy winter last year but please for the love of all that’s holy I’m ready for this summer to be done! Finished…put out of it’s misery! I need the fall back and fast! Although I’ve kept myself busy with my fun Kiss and Tell: Encounters of a Prostitute serial, I’m still ready for school to start back and the leaves to change colors…Change. That’s what I need right now. A freaking change! I’ve managed to screw up my knee even more than it was screwed up before and I’ve not done nearly enough of what I wanted to do this summer. But I didn’t get to see family twice in the span of two weeks and my cousin got married…so yay! Another cousin graduated high school. So those were good things! I ended up with a wicked sinus infection that lasted 3 weeks and I thought I was dying. Now I’m just trying to make it the almost 7 weeks left before the next college school year starts…pep talk every day for $200 Alex! That’s how I feel right now…but I have decided to take control of my publishing hat…I’ve started a two year plan for my books and also hope to get a small 2-3 author publishing company up and off the ground by the start of the new year. I have book ideas coming out of every place imaginable so that’s always a plus but I miss school. I’m excited to start the mental health counseling part of my dual program and I can’t wait to get back to the psychology field…I have been writing though!

So tell me…how is your summer going? Loving it? Hate it? Wish it was over? Let me know in the comments and we can be miserable together 🙂 Anyone going to the Boston Comic Con this year?

The Word Bird

It’s been a long fall semester but I managed to escape unscathed. Now it’s time to get back to the writing part of my life. I have so many book projects I want to work on but have no idea where to start…here is a quick list of what I have planned for 2015…this is subject to change though…

Where Did The Time Go

Well as I sit here and enjoy the last day of being in my 20s I look back on my life and think to myself, what have I done in the last almost 30 years of my life?

So many things…

I gave 8 years of my life to the USAF

I published a few stories

I’ve been overseas a few times

I got to go to the Louvre

Meet a lot of cool people

Went to a few book signings (some as fans and some as an author myself)

I lost my mom

I got two degrees (an AA in Logistics and a BA in Psychology)

Starting working on my Master’s

And so many more things I could probably say. My life has been good and bad, happy and sad, and I don’t think I would change a bit about it. Everything I’ve seen and done has made me into the person that I am today. Who knows what may have happened if some of the choices I made may have been different. All I can do is hope for another 30 or so years after this. Everyday is precious and all I can do is take things one day at a time and keep trying to do better tomorrow than I do today…

Writer Funk

Since my first book was published I threw myself into this whole ‘author’ thing full force. I was a writing machine. The plot bunnies were hopping around like crazy and everything was all good. Then the weight of everything came crashing down and the outlet I used to love turned into so much work and stress. It became a whirlwind of marketing, promotions, teasers, release parties, and blog tours to name a few things. I lost what was important in my writing which is: LOVE. I loved writing and now it’s like pulling teeth to write the stories that used to flow so freely in my mind. I can’t connect the dots anymore. It’s a sad day and I’ve decided to take a break from my current momentum of writing. I’ve gotten an idea for a Dark Romance Suspense/Thriller that I’m excited about and I’m running with it for fun. I’m taking my time and don’t expect it to be done until next winter. I have to get my mojo back and the only way I can do that is to distance myself from a lot of things I was doing. No more blog tours, major promo, or parties. I have my pages that I will post info on about my books, my blog, and my website so if you want updates on any of my info make sure you are following my blog, website, and Facebook pages 🙂

***UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS***

Hello everyone! I know I’ve rarely been on but with school and work I barely have time to sleep let alone post a lot but that should be changing in the next two weeks as I will only be going to school so that will give me more time to not only focus more on my homework but other things as well…

I am only about 10 chapters away from finishing And So She Waited’s first draft YAY! I hope to be able to giveaway some ARCs mid Oct or last week of Oct. around Halloween week

Once I finish And So She Waited I will be working on the next Dark Indiscretions book Seer Destined. I can’t wait to get back into my world. I will also be working on Callisto while writing Seer Destined but my focus will mostly be on Seer Destined hoping to have it out early 2015 as the story is getting deeper and I will need time to properly tie things together.

I have the last cover for the last book in the Dark Indiscretions Series done.

past_hunted_small

I goal is to have the entire Dark Indiscretions Series done by Dec. 2015 so that means I may be silent a lot as I’m working on the series while also attending school.

My book signing is coming up Oct. 4th and if you are in the NE area and haven’t bought your ticket yet you can do so here:http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/763462
You will also be able to get them at the door but I would recommend buying them now so you don’t have to wait I hope to have a few goody bags for the first few people who come to my table and are fans…more on that as it gets closer.

If you’ve read any of my books PLEASE consider leaving a review. It would mean a lot. Also if you haven’t started Dark Indiscretions yet book 1 is only 99 pennies and sold pretty much everywhere on ebook now besides Google books…
