It’s The Little Things

Well, well, well…I finally freaking did it. What’s it, you ask? It is finish my BA for Psychology after 10 years…that’s what IT is!! To say I’m excited would be an understatement. I am just so freaking stoked. Not only will I now have BA but I also have an AA in Logistics from my 8 years being the the United States Air Force. I am in a very different place from where I was 10, 8, or even 1 year ago. I have 3 works published with hopefully 5 more added to that number before this year is out. I’ve met some wonderful and not so wonderful people on this author journey that I have embarked on. I have my first signing coming up with Boston Comic Con, I’ve made an official author website, I’m getting the hang of the whole social media thing (well some days at least), and most importantly I’m having fun. I will also be attending Authors In The City (AITC) next year in March…the tickets are already on sale. Check out the pinned post for details on that. Also if you are interested in being apart of my street team just click here.

For all you Facebook fans I have an amazing giveaway going on here, (just look out for the pinned post) and I’m planning a huge multi author 4th of July giveaway here. So make sure you check back to enter.

For anyone interested I’m accepting participants in my Double Blog Tour/Cover Reveal here, there are review opportunities for the first two books in my Dark Indiscretions Series, as well as chances to interview me.

I’m currently working on I guess what you would call a spin off or companion novellas to my Dark Indiscretions Series which will be called The Dark Indiscretions Chronicles, detailing more intimately certain characters that aren’t detailed as much as I would have wanted in the Dark Indiscretions Series. I also have 6 books planned in a Sci-Fi, Steampunk, Fantasy type world that I want to start working on at the beginning of the year. I’m really excited about it and will even be possibly using a friend as the model on the covers.

I have so many book ideas that it’s become crazy to keep them all separate. I’ve been using Scrivener, which I love! The layout and organization is amazing. It’s especially helpful since I want to release an Insider’s Guide once the Dark Indiscretions Series is complete. Well that’s enough of my ramblings for today! Happy Sunday and for all the True Blood fans, I hope tonight’s episode is better than the last!

Welcome To The Real World

Hello. It’s been awhile. To say I started my journey full of excitement and wonder would be correct but I’m slowing losing the excitement and starting to wonder what the hell was I thinking.

The job search is hard as hell and most places that do want to hire are commission jobs. Now I wouldn’t be adverse to taking one of these positions but I’m trying to buy a condo and it just won’t happen with a commission only job at the moment.

So I’m at a loss of what to do really. Hope my books mysteriously sell a million copies overnight? One can only dream until then I’m going to try not to put myself in a mental hospital worrying about it. I can always sleep in my car right??

The Time Has Come

Wow!! It’s been a long time since I wrote a blog post. Sorry about that. So much has been going on. I’m working on the first draft of my new book, I’m transitioning from military life to civilian, I’m moving (YAY), looking for a new job, taking my last class for my BA, finished up an AA, working on a small 10K story for a multiple author release, went to Mississippi for a week, met Kresley Cole!!, Jennifer Probst, Emma Chase, Lisa Renee Jones, Alice Clayton, and Christina Lauren for the Belles on Wheels tour, and the list goes on and on and on. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks.

Hopefully I finish the first draft of the book I’m working on (my longest one yet, just hit 50K last night and I have about another 10K to go) and I’ll post a small snippet 🙂

I also started making my own key chains for my Dark Indiscretions Series. I’m totally addicted now. They aren’t finished yet, still need to add two pieces 🙂

So what’s everyone else been up to? And Happy Memorial Day!

My Writing Process – Blog Tour

IMG_0556Hello and welcome to the My Writing Process – Blog Tour!!!!! Today we will be examining a bit about my writing process and why I do what I do 🙂

My amazing fellow Indie Author and new friend ELR Jones tagged me in this amazing event!

And now to answer a few questions….

What am I working on…

I’m currently working on too many things at once. I’m in the process of polishing up and formatting book 2 in my Dark Indiscretions Series, Dark Indiscretions: Monster Unleashed, that gives the ‘bad guys’ story of day to day life. Their hopes, fears, and dreams. I’m working on a Prequel novella to my Dark Indiscretions Series that gives a bit of back story before I go into book 3 in the series. I have a total of 7 books planned in this series at the moment…it can be summed up with this line: Dark Indiscretions…where even the bad guys are afraid of the dark.

I also had an idea for a YA short story that I’m six chapters in about a Amish type group of elemental coven of withches who go through a Rumspringa of sorts to determine which element they will lead with the rest of their lives at 16. It’s in fact titled Rumspringa. It’s very different my Dark Indiscretions Series. Only thing it has in common is the paranormal/supernatural aspect.

Then there is this project I’m working on called Sacrifice Broken. I can’t go into many details at the moment because this is going to be a whole new mythology/world I’m building basically from scratch. I have a few basic ideas and doing a bit of research to get a basic fill but I will be putting my own brand of quirky to the paranormal/supernatural creatures we all know and love. It’s going to be a huge novel because right now it’s a stand alone in my mind. It’s going to be the biggest project I’ve ever done. My currently books are around 35-40K and this one will be a wayyyyyyy bigger than that. Probably around 400-600 pages.

Lastly, I am a poet as well and published a small collection of my poems that is out now called Inside The Heart Of My Soul currently available on Smashwords, BN, and Amazon.

DIBook 1 in my Dark Indiscretions Series is also available online at Amazon for print and ebook and online at BN for print. Clicking the book image will take you to the Amazon page and wouldn’t you know it…it’s FREE today! Happy St. Patty’s Day!

How does my work differ from others of its genre…

My work is a twist on the traditional vampires, werewolves, or whatever else. I didn’t want to write about such and such being so good and wholesome. I wrote about the bad guys. The guys we love to hate. I wanted to show that even though they kill and don’t have the same morals and the next person, that they are not different. They want what we all want. Love, loyalty, and family. They kill because it’s necessary to their survival. They don’t do it for fun…well not all of them. They try to stay under the radar but sometimes things get out of hand. Half the times it’s the ones closest to us that inflict the most damage. I wanted to bring something to the paranormal world that hadn’t been explored yet. I kind of spliced some creatures characteristics together and made a whole new type of paranormal. My characters say things that other think but will never say.

Why do I write what I do…

I write paranormal/supernatural because I love anything fantasy, mythology, and folktale based. It’s so cool to read about magic and the unknown. You can play around some much in this genre and that’s what I love about it. I can change up things and maybe people will be shocked at first but slowly they start excepting that this is a different style and take on the traditional. There are only so many times you can read about the same old paranormal. I wanted to write new paranormals as well as a new story line dynamic and I don’t think I would have had as much fun writing contemporary romances about everyday life. Not that everyday life can’t be exciting but it just makes it all the more fun to write about enhanced supernatural creatures that defy human logic 🙂

Ultimately I write because I enjoy it.

How does your writing process work…

I thought I knew my process…the first book I wrote I sat down and cranked it out chapter by chapter. Well second book was nothing like that. I had scene notes all over my iPhone, notebook, or word document. They would come at random times and in no particular order. I would still go through the book chapter by chapter but I had all these scenes that I wasn’t sure where they were going until I go to it. It eventually all came together in the end. Now the huge project I’m working on I tried Scrivener for a trial and love it. The organization is crazy and that’s just what I need for this one. Character sheets, setting sheets, and the like. All in kind of note card order and can be complied into one document later if you want. I love it.

Some times I like to write in a blank notebook and some times I like to type it out. Just depends really. I don’t outline though. I don’t decide where the story is going. I just let it flow as it comes. I get aha moments in my own world and I’m like I didn’t see that coming. Not outlining keeps the anxiety away. That way if something goes left field I don’t have to change anything. I just work around it and make it flow, if that makes sense.

And that’s my little mini story about my writing journey. I’m always learning something new everyday and daydreaming about the next scene. I love it. I’ve turned a hobby into a part-time job (more like full-time) and met some great people along the way. I look forward to bringing many more stories into the world!

Coming up next week!!

Michelle Abbot

I’m a self-published author of new adult romance, and like to write about heroes who begin as the underdog and are protective of their girl. I’m an avid reader of romance, am addicted to coffee and love wine and chocolate, so yeah, not the most healthy eating and drinking habits 🙂 I spend way too much time online when I should be writing. I collect teddy bears and occasionally knit a couple of rows on a sweater I started years ago, which I may eventually finish in time to wear for my funeral 🙂
My latest work is a new adult contemporary romance titled, Just Stay. I hope to have it published within the next month.

Guest Post – Ashley Phillips

Today we have our very first guest post from my dear friend, PA, and Beta reader, Ashley Phillips! Please say hi and make her feel welcomed 🙂 She is in the process of writing her first book and I am in LOVE so far… I can’t wait until the day she publishes it and is able to share it with all of you…Without further ado here is her piece…..

I find it completely difficult being ADD and trying to write a book. I want to finish my book off in the same setting and plot. Not start off with Cinderella and end up writing about the big bad wolf who saved Rapunzel from Copper because Snow White  didn’t get her legs and stayed a mermaid. See my problem? I have to go back and reread to make sure I do not do that! haha 😉 I also find just writing a challenge. I have the scene perfectly set but I can’t seem to make my fingers move across the keys because I am too busy thinking of something else. My mind is a whirl pool stuck in a tornado being flushed down a toilet. Does that make sense? I hope so! I love thinking of worlds I could create and I hope one day I can publish a book with at least one commenter saying I did a good job. I would love to hear criticism and feed back. I am terrified of it but I want it you know? I think it will make me a better writer. I could not do any of this without a great person named Shakuita Johnson. Juita is an amazing person who inspired me to write and actually do it. Otherwise, it would be years down the road until I put a book out there. I am not doing it all myself though, My step mom is co-writing with me and  my mom and cousins are my betas. I love my family for all their help.

I Can See The Light…

So this week is finals week for the three class I was taken. I’m happy for two reasons…one it’s finals week!!! Three class online, while working full time and trying to write part time sucks ASS!!! Yes I said it. Secondly, I’m happy because I only have three classes left until I will hold a BA in Psychology. That’s right twitches…I’ll be a card holding degree carrier! The day after my three classes I’m currently taking end I start two more classes. Yay!!! Fun times 🙂 I’m also free…well only for the summer and then grad school starts. The grind never ends but I’m excited. Some many new things going on this year that I can’t complain. My second book will be published in April, I’m getting out of the military, moving to Boston, and buying my first piece of real estate. All in all I think 2014 is looking pretty damn good!

I’ve been thinking…

I know, I know. What the hell is running through my brain now, right? Well publishers. That’s been running through my brain. Should I or shouldn’t I. We all know being an indie author and self pubbed can get a bit pricey. I’m not really worried about the cost. There are always work arounds for everything. I just want everyone to take the crazy twist filled journey of my series with me. Plus I think it would be a great opportunity. Only thing is I don’t want to be censored. What do I mean? Well I don’t want to write what I think is a kick ass book, only to be told nope. Redo it. Take it out. Fix it. Publishing myself I can write how I see it. I’m not confined to a box or someone else’s interests. But sometimes I think a few more doors would open up if I had of tried to at least submit my book to a publisher first. Maybe. Possibly. I don’t really know. I’m not an expert. I’m not going to school for this. This is just a random musing from my head. I’m 99% sure everything I write will be sled published but I still dream of maybe one day something I write will be picked up by a publisher and they will love it as it is. Until then I’m going to continue working on my Dark Indiscretions Series, my short story Rumspringa (which I need to make a page for 🙂 ), and this new idea I have that doesn’t have enough detail yet for me to talk about but as big as it is I plan to make it one huge stand alone novel. It’s going to be the biggest thing I’ve ever done and I’m scared, nervous, and excited. I can tell you that it’s called Sacrifice Broken and like anything I do it’s not the norm at all. I’m putting my own touch of flare on the supernatural creatures that we all love. It’s going to be on a whole new level of awesomeness all straight from my never turned off brain. I can’t wait until it fleshed out more and I can talk about it. I’m still building right now. It’s fun. This weekend I plan to redesign my blog so stay tune!!! Oh and don’t forget Dark Indiscretions is FREE today <3.

In the words of Indie Arie, " don't be offended this is all my opinion ain't nothing that I'm saying law."

The ‘R’ Word

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while now but never had the time. Now that I do let’s talk about why I wanted to write paranormal fantasy fiction. I don’t like doing the ‘R’ word. What’s the ‘R’ word you ask? Research. I hate it with everything in me. I do enough research for term papers so with my leisurely writing I didn’t want to have to make sure I was politically correct about what was going on in my story. So I made up a lot of the words and spells and the idea was formed and without a bit of research. Even for the city because I never really talk about the city at all. It’s just for gee whiz information. I let my audience decided what the city life is about based on their own knowledge. Nothing really takes place at a certain shop or club anyway. So I was all ‘middle finger to the world’ about research. The characters aren’t real or human so I had carte blanche with their abilities, ages, and so on.

Now I said all that to say this…I was wrong! Yep, I’m admitting it. I’m soooo wrong. I thought sticking to a genre where the characters were species that didn’t exist in the world wouldn’t require any former knowledge. Then I had this book idea and realized I would have to at least know some basic mythologies and characteristics just for my general knowing. Yes I will still be taking huge liberties with my own mythology of the characters but some of the stuff would have really seemed like gibberish without at least some plausibility. Now I know were-creatures, elves, and the like don’t really exist but there have been enough information on them that people have a general idea of what they should or shouldn’t be capable of. Like I said I will definitely be putting my own spin on these species so it’s not the same old song and dance but at least now I’m more aware of general characteristics.

I still strongly hate research of any kind when writing for fun. It feels too much like work to me but in order to bring the best story I can think of to my readers, I’ll bite the bullet and try to pretend that I somewhat know what I’m talking about 🙂

A Bit Of An Update!

Holy crap! I feel like I haven’t really blogged in a while. Yes, I’ve posted some cover reveals and such but I haven’t really said much that’s from me. I’ve been busy. Geez! If it wasn’t for the schedule feature I wouldn’t have even had time to post the little I’ve been posting. I’m currently editing Dark Indiscretions: Monster Unleashed ( I hate editing) and it’s coming together 🙂 I hope it’s a great follow up to the first which has been getting some great reviews! I’m participating in all kinds of goodness over on Facebook to get notice and but my book out there. The Book Blast starts Monday and I’m like a kid on Christmas waiting for this thing to start. Don’t miss the awesome giveaway I have with it. It’s on the upcoming book blast page. 40 gifts will be given so you could be on of those 40! Event your friends and check out the blogs that will be hosting my blast. There are 10 and they are really cool! I also started a YA that I’m currently calling Rumspringa. I’ll post a bit about it soon. In the meantime if you use Wattpad the first 3 chapters are up there. I need to post the 4th soon. Some much stuff and so little time 🙂 My Facebook Dark Indiscretions book page reached 1000 likes last night! I’m stoked about that and my author page Shakuita Johnson is almost at 500 🙂 Such great things happening this year. If you haven’t checked out my book yet the ebook is on Amazon and you can get the print versions from Amazon, BN, and createspace. Until next time guys. I have a paper to write for class that’s due Sunday at midnight 😦 Wish me luck!
