DEBT

By Rachel Dunning

Expected Release Date:

March 30, 2016

What’s it about?

The Debt Collector

I pay my debts, and I expect others to.

I was raised in the slums of London, I knew nothing of privilege. My father was murdered when I was seventeen. Morty figured my father’s passing meant I would automatically take on dad’s debts. I refused.

And I paid for that refusal.

So did my sister.

So now I fight. All I know how to do is fight. The best cash is in the states, so that’s where I am now. A big fish called Vito came along offering me a “favor” when I arrived.

Another debt.

I paid for that one too.

I knew Kyla Hensley would be trouble when I met her. But I wanted her. I could see through the falsehood of her wannabe-slutty clothes and her sexy legs. So I chased her.

Besides, trouble is my middle name.

Kyla Hensley

I was brought up in privilege, but I lacked everything else. My father is a business tycoon who buys and sells and doesn’t care who gets rolled over in the process.

I never knew my mother, and all I have of her is a photo with a note scrawled on the back in French saying “I’m sorry.” The only Female Figure I had growing up is my dad’s wife who is a bleach blond with seven boob jobs. We never bonded.

I drink. I party. I meet guys.

But I wasn’t always like that.

I’ve had a string of lovers in the last few years, the worst and most recent of which was Vince Somerset. My best friend Vera was dating a guy called Rory Cansoom who is the opposite of Vince in so many ways, and yet so the same.

She and I hit the road for the summer, getting away from the two college psychos and just trying to have some fun.

But there’s a funny thing about trouble, the more you run from it, the more it finds you.

Which is when I met the Debt Collector.

It was only supposed to be sex. He made that clear. I made that clear.

That’s all it was supposed to be.

I never expected to fall in love. I never expected to fall so deeply, madly, uncomfortably in love with a man who is wrong, so wrong for me.

And yet…so unbelievably right.

Excerpt #1

~Kyla~

I push my head back against the wall, not sure what’s coming, but not fighting it either.

“Who are you?” he repeats.

“I…I don’t know what you mean.”

“I see you at a bar in Texas, then I look for you all over Nashville. And suddenly you’re at my side in a hospital, following me into this warehouse. Who are you?”

“I didn’t follow you into the warehouse. You needed to pick up your truck, and you were stumbling.”

“So?”

“So I wanted to make sure you were OK.”

“And?”

And I want you to take my clothes off and I want us to live happily ever after. “That’s it.”

Logan grins, a deadly look for him with his dimples. “Don’t do that,” I say.

“What?”

“Smile.”

“Why not?”

Because you’re beautiful. “Just don’t.”

Excerpt #2

~Logan~

I have no desire to settle down.

I have no desire to make Kyla be the last woman I’m ever with.

But, damn it, I’d like to be given a chance to do those things. Does she even feel anything for me?

I know I do.

I feel something.

Not love. Something else.

Like I need her.

Like I’d stop breathing without her.

Like the sun would stop being so bright or the sounds of the world so sweet if she disappeared.

Guest Post – April Baerga Scruggs

11741311_10203411230281501_1285488581890882426_oToday on the blog we have my bestest friend with a little discussion question…she has also provided her opinion on the matter. Please feel free to join in this amazing discussion…

Discussion Question

If an individual or group was to implement strong, efficient means of promoting unity without referring to racism or discrimination what would that look like in one’s community?

Answer

My initial response would begin by educating the community on what social change is trying to be accomplished so the common goal can be clearly identified so there is no room for miscommunication but can create avenues to enhance different levels of the foundation. I would also gather a census among many different cultures, religion, and targeted populations to see where the immediate need lies within these communities on the micro level so expansion will be apt to happen on the macro level. People like to feel involved and that change will positively influence them which means that the topic needing to be addressed should be experienced/witnessed within all communities. Majority of effective change results in places where the problems are continuous and potentially create chaos or concern for others involved. This process in my opinion will take time but change is constant and is challenging to associate with perfection.

Researching Urban Fantasy

By Cristy Rey: Writer, librarian, slayer of demons, romancer of stones…you know, all the stuff that matters.

For Shakuita Johnson’s blog, The Ramblings of Me, at https://dark-indiscretions.com/

I write urban fantasy. This means I weave imagined fantastical creatures and themes through the “real world,” or the world that we live in. I create a mythology for my characters. I impose order in the world they inhabit. I write the rules and, sometimes, I even break them.

In this genre, as in all the genres and subgenres that fall under the fantasy banner, authors are like gods. We can choose to create from scratch and fill readers in along the way, or we can leave you as much in the dark as cavemen before Prometheus gifted them with fire. Alternately, we can take what is already out there in the popular consciousness and tweak it to our liking. We can re-create myths, legends, and fairy tales. We can take Barbies and rip their heads off and reform their limbs so they become something different, something all our own.

I have done the latter.

As much as my series, the Incarnate series, has been called “different” and “new,” it’s not altogether unfamiliar. I write witches and werewolves. I skew existing concepts derived from sources as far-ranging as Western neo-paganism, Greco-Roman mythology, contemporary pop culture, Gothic literature, Modernist poetry, and wildlife photography…to name a few.

Shakuita invited me to guest blog for her and, at first, we thought I’d provide sources on the writing craft and the indie publishing business. I was gung-ho until we started talking about our next projects and our conversations moved from “How can we hone our business skills?” to “What information is out there about X, Y, and Z for researching our next novels?”

This blog post is an extension of that. As a good librarian (spoiler alert: I am a great librarian), I want to share a selection from my personal bibliography. I invite you to take a look at it and, most importantly, to evaluate the sources for yourself. In the immortal words of Obi-Wan (a character built on the archetypes of Campbell’s seminal Hero with a Thousand Faces), “Use the Force.”

Cristy Rey is the author of the urban fantasy Incarnate series. The first book, Taking Back Sunday, and a short prequel novelette, Edge of Seventeen, are available now at online retailers. She also writes and publishes unconventional romantic women’s fiction. Weeping Angels will be released in July 2014, and The Heart Grow Fonder will be released at the end of the year.

Cristy lives in Miami, FL where she is a reader and writer most of the time, and a knitter much less of the time than she was six months before she took up writing again. She writes the books that she likes to read. She describes her writing style as riot grrrl Jane Austen sprinkled with a little magic. There’s always a killer soundtrack running in the background of her novels – all you need to do is turn to the playlist to know what’s up.

OFFICE PLAY By Stephanie Williams Coming this Spring.

Jeanette Foster is an outside auditor for hire and she’s very good at her job but nothings prepared her for this.

Someone is stealing at Lambert, Parker and Bradley, a prestigious advertising agency. And not just office supplies. Laptops, company cars and expensive software just for starters.

But that’s not what makes her assignment interesting. It’s her new working partner, the head of IT. A modern day Tarzan by the name of Adam. And she’s more than willing to be his Jane.

Adam Strathmore is the head of IT. The new outside auditor had him wanting to pound his chest and drag her off to his lair; where he’d keep her naked. He does something he swore he would never do again—get involved with someone at work. But the attraction is instant and he can’t contain himself. In or out of the office.

Can they solve what looks like ordinary office supply pilfering and get their relationship back on track without both of them getting fired?

EXCERPT:

Adam looked up from his cell, and stood in front of the Miss Foster’s office door. He pressed his ear to the door. He could hear her on the phone, but knocked anyway, hoping that she would let him in and he could set her up while she continued her conversation.

“Come in.”

He opened the door quietly and walked in. The woman hung up the phone and got up, a brilliant smile swept across her face. Her beautiful face.

“Hello, you must be Adam. I’m Jeanette Foster. I’m the new Chief Auditor of Operations.” She stepped from behind her desk and reached out to shake his hand.

“Yeah…Adam….Strathmore,” he barely croaked out. Va-va-va-voom! His crew wasn’t just talking this time. This woman in every sense of the word was drop dead gorgeous.

He took her hand, but kept his eyes focused on her. All of her. From her head to her feet. She was tall, at least five ten. Stacked! It’s been a long time since he’s seen a woman with real curves like this. Now he would admit, his thirty-five years hasn’t exposed him to every woman on the planet. But it seemed every woman he met at the club, or at work, seemed more focused on having a hard, lean, body more than him.

Her skin coloring reminded him of a rich cup of coffee, with just a dollop of creamer. Even with the hair pulled back, the thick black ponytail hung below her shoulder blades. Her face was heart shaped and her large round hazel eyes were dazzling.

Adam found himself moving closer to her, her hand still in his. It was her mouth that was pulling him. Those full, burgundy lips were calling to him. And damn it, if he didn’t want to answer.

In that brief moment, a vision of him and her on the floor of her office having buck wild sex played in his mind. The thought of them naked together made his groin ache. He never had a reaction this fast to any woman.

“Mr. Strathmore?”

Adam shook his head, when he realized that Miss Foster had been calling him. “Huh?”

“I asked if that’s my new laptop.” She pointed downward.

He looked under his arm. “Oh yeah. And please….call me Adam.” He finally let go of her hand. “I’m here to set things up for you.”

“Great, I want to get started as soon as possible.”

“That’s what I’m here for Ms. Foster.”

“Please, call me Jeanette. Ms. makes me feel old.”

“I don’t think anything could ever make you feel old. You’re an exquisite looking woman.”

Before anyone could react to his words, they both stood there looking at each other, while what sounded like her cell phone rang in the background.

Blurb

Theana ran from Seurri City, home of the wolf shifters now public to humans, to escape a mating with her childhood friend. She wasn’t in the mood for a mate, or the trappings of politics. Then she meets Rafael, alpha of the strongest pack in Seurri, and his beta, Gregori. Suddenly she can’t catch her breath, or keep control of her emotions.

Rafael and Gregori refuse to let Theana get her own way, or deny the love they could share. Perhaps two men for their feisty mate are definitely better than one. Now to stall the would-be childhood suitor, and stop an all out war between the packs—but love is worth fighting for.

Behind The Scenes

My co-author, LeTeisha Newton, and I decided to write this piece based off of a shared thought. She was a well-known paranormal writer with a concentration in shifters and I was, and still am, new on the scene with a main focus on paranormal. We both belonged to a small group of women writers where we were coached on a daily basis with writing prompts and exercises to broaden our writing horizons. In that time, LeTeisha and I noticed that we had similar writing styles and somewhat in-your-face types of personalities. That alone brought us together.

We knew we wanted to do a shifter piece, mainly because I had yet to write one and she was very knowledgeable on the subject (an expert if you ask me). She also added the element of having a tough as balls, dominant female lead based off of my female characters that I tended to write in my other
books. Then once the plot bunnies started to form and me not quite understanding the different personalities of an alpha vs a beta we just organically decided to make them share both personality aspects almost working as one cohesive unit. And with our female protagonist having the interesting task of choosing one of the two as a mate we opted for the fun approach – why not choose both?

Conquering Theana was conceived into this world then. Not too soon after the start (within Chapter 2) a character was introduced that was created for the possibility of expanding the series and once that seed was planted we decided to grow the one book into many. We have now plotted nearly fifteen books into the series and there is no end in sight so watch out for what’s to come. Book 1 just released, March 21, 2014, Book 2 (Conquering Camden…there’s and exclusive one for your readers) is finished, and Book 3
(Conquering Convel) has begun. So keep along with books, the videos, the website, and the blog.

Guest Post – Ashley Phillips

Today we have our very first guest post from my dear friend, PA, and Beta reader, Ashley Phillips! Please say hi and make her feel welcomed 🙂 She is in the process of writing her first book and I am in LOVE so far… I can’t wait until the day she publishes it and is able to share it with all of you…Without further ado here is her piece…..

I find it completely difficult being ADD and trying to write a book. I want to finish my book off in the same setting and plot. Not start off with Cinderella and end up writing about the big bad wolf who saved Rapunzel from Copper because Snow White  didn’t get her legs and stayed a mermaid. See my problem? I have to go back and reread to make sure I do not do that! haha 😉 I also find just writing a challenge. I have the scene perfectly set but I can’t seem to make my fingers move across the keys because I am too busy thinking of something else. My mind is a whirl pool stuck in a tornado being flushed down a toilet. Does that make sense? I hope so! I love thinking of worlds I could create and I hope one day I can publish a book with at least one commenter saying I did a good job. I would love to hear criticism and feed back. I am terrified of it but I want it you know? I think it will make me a better writer. I could not do any of this without a great person named Shakuita Johnson. Juita is an amazing person who inspired me to write and actually do it. Otherwise, it would be years down the road until I put a book out there. I am not doing it all myself though, My step mom is co-writing with me and  my mom and cousins are my betas. I love my family for all their help.
