My Review

The Elemental Detective

4 1/2 Stars

*** This book was given to me by Reach For The Stars Marketing for an honest review.

***Disclaimer…I didn’t know this book was a part of a series until I started reading it but it didn’t take away for the story itself, in fact, it only made me want to go back and purchase books 1-4 🙂

Where to begin…this is my kind of book. Murder, mermaids, and magic all in one black. You have Riga, a PI, who is also a necromancer or just became one (I’m a bit fuzzy, must read other books) and while honeymooning in Hawaii with her husband Donovan, mayhem seems to have followed them to their little piece of the world. Riga doesn’t want to answer the call at first but finds herself knee deep in the muck of it, when Donovan and she stumbled upon the bodies of a man and a seal.

Family and friends are her focus to begin her investigation and you finds out some things that she already knew and didn’t want to see and some she didn’t. Meanwhile the Hawaiian magic seems to have a strange attraction to her husband. They team up to find the source of the murders and uncover some of the mysteries of the island. The main characters are lovable and well written and so is the world Ms. Weiss has created. I found myself spellbound and engrossed in the world and was hungering for more. This is definitely a series that I will be following from beginning to end. In a small way I was even reminded of The Mercedes Thompson novels by Patricia Briggs but only in the thought that magic followed the main female around wherever she went, even when trying to enjoy a honeymoon.

It seemed everywhere they went someone or something was out to stop them and trip them up. This book was so well written that even with all the suspects I had no idea of who it could have even been until it was told towards the end of the book. I didn’t even have a suspicion. I was completely in the dark until it happened and boy was I shocked! Outstanding twists and turns at every corner. I will most definitely be starting this wonderful series from the very beginning.

Excerpt: pages 1 – 3

The palms outside rattled like bones, awakening Riga. A warm salt breeze slipped through the open door, and shivered across her bare skin. Beside her, the mattress sagged, the bed frame creaking an accompaniment to her own, steady breathing.

One breath, rising and falling. Her breath.

Muddled by sleep, she stilled, her heart leaping with a sudden jolt of adrenaline as she understood it wasn’t her husband beside her, weighting the bed. Riga kept her breathing steady, and extended her other senses. Probing. She opened her eyes, peering through her lashes. Through the open glass door, the moon illuminated a winged figure, hunched beside her on the hotel’s bed.

“Brigitte!” Riga sat up, torn between annoyance and the panic rising in her throat. She clutched the sheet to her breasts. “What are you doing here? Where’s Donovan?”

The gargoyle shrugged, the sound of rocks grating together, and the bed shifted. “Monsieur Mosse left an hour ago,” she graveled, a French-accented Lauren Bacall. “And his whereabouts are the least of your worries.”

Riga lurched to the left and reached for the bedside lamp. Instead, her fingers found emptiness, fumbled in the dark, then touched a wooden leg, upright, seemingly supporting nothing. Where the hell had the tabletop gone? Her fingers brushed a rounded stump and it fell over with a crash. Where the hell had the lamp gone?

She swung her feet out of bed, took two steps, and bashed her shin into something hard. Riga felt along the wall and smacked the light switch, cursing. Uncomprehending, she stared. Everything but the bed had been turned upside down. Cushioned wicker chairs. Wooden table. Television… She grabbed her silk robe, draped over an upside down ottoman, and slipped it on, walked to the entertainment center. That was still upright, but the TV inside had been inverted.

Wonder leaked past her anxiety. She sniffed. A trace of magic lingered, wild like a forest glade, elemental. Fae? She regarded the creative destruction she’d slept through, and amended that thought. Stealth fae. Dammit. She fumbled the belt of her robe.

“What happened to Donovan? Where is he?” Riga’s voice sounded shrill, even to her ears.

“Your husband left of his own accord.”

“Alone?” Riga motioned toward the mess. No, it couldn’t be happening again. Not another run-in with the faery world. Not here. Not now. “Did you see who—”

Brigitte’s stone-feathered head reared backwards. “I do not spy!”

“But you saw Donovan leave.”

“And then I waited by ze rocks until you woke up.”

You woke me up.”

The gargoyle picked at her feathers. “I grew bored, and the sun will rise soon, and we have much to discuss.”

The diamond on Riga’s finger glinted, and she rubbed the back of her wedding rings with her thumb. She and Donovan hadn’t yet adjusted to island time, and both were rising well before daybreak. Donovan had probably woken up while she was sleeping and grown restless, hadn’t wanted to wake her. Of course he was safe. It couldn’t be happening again. That would be stretching the bounds of… She worked the knot on her robe. He was safe.

She swallowed, despising the remnants of fear that made her muscles twitch, and flipped her emotions to anger. Anger was simpler.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me, I’m begging you to.”

When Lexi returns home to Texas after being gone for ten years, she is surprised by how welcoming her distant family has become. But the real surprise is on them when Lexi doesn’t come back alone.

Questions are asked, Secrets are held, Hearts are broken. Lexi now has to explain to her family why at only twenty four years old she has a nine year old son. She also has to explain to Zander how he is unknowingly a father after all these years, and how her feelings never changed even with all this time apart. Two weeks before he is about to get married.

Now decisions need to be made. As Lexi makes a mess of things, she also starts to make a new life for her and her son. She now has to decide if sticking around or heading back to Ohio is for the best.

This New Adult Contemporary Romance is for mature readers, at least 17+ in age, due to adult situations.

MY REVIEW

I’m usually not a big fan of contemporary romances, they aren’t my go to genre, but I’m glad I read this one. It brought up those memories of first love and how much one action can cause so many chain reactions…

In the beginning I was having mixed feelings between being sad for the life this girl had and outraged. From none of her family noticing her and the fact that she was glad about it, to feelings of excitement for a first love.

Her friend Bray on the other hand is that friend that we all have and sometimes wonder why, then we realize…oh that’s why you’re my BFF, but she brings home the reason why you shouldn’t ask you friends at the age of 14-15 about sex. You don’t get very good information or safety talks. Just the you should because it feels so good and the “if you love him” speech…

Her parents are the worse sort of people in this world at first glance but when you are young you interrupt things one-way when the reality is something completely different. My first impression was that instead of taking the time to deal with their children they ship them to grandmas or any other relative that wouldn’t “mind” taking them in. How do you think your kids feel when they feel abandoned by the people who are supposed to love them the most? This sort of thing pisses me off! But as I said what we see at first glance isn’t always correct…

I thought I had just forgot the main females name so I went back to the beginning and nope, I’m on chapter two and have no clue what this chicks name is…Lexi. To me this was a good idea. I was more invested. I wanted to keep reading because her name’s in here somewhere right and in the process of looking I got hooked!

Then the good times roll…

Shit hits the fan when a secret Lexi has been hiding for ten years is known and emotions run a little high.

But everything isn’t as it seems.

The interaction between Lexi and Tanner is sweet and I don’t like how it ended up. That’s all I’ll say about that.

OMG holy fucking secrets!!! Secrets, secrets, everywhere and I admit I figured what some where as soon as it was being set up but it was perfect and but everything in perspective and made me go…ahhh that’s why.

At one point I wanted to punch Zander in the face with my booted foot, repeatedly…

There were a few teary moments.

In this story about love and lost it brings up memories of first love or the love that got away.

Only part I didn’t like is Lexi did seem to give in a bit too easy after the stunt Zander pulled at his wedding.

There is so much more I could say but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else.

All in all a great romantic read with some amazing characters. I’d recommend this book to friends who love romance and want to know if rekindling old flames is worth the risk 🙂

The Interview – Ashley Beale

Personal, who are you type questions

Describe yourself in five words? Unique, cheerful, talkative, crazy, fun

Who do people say you look like? When I was skinnier, I was told by quite a few people I looked like Rachel Bilson- which used to make me so happy! Now I don’t get told I look like anyone, lol.

If a star could play you in the story of your life who would you hire? Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Lucy Hale

What fact about yourself would really surprise people? I start out incredibly shy (to the point people think I’m mean/rude), then I come out of my shell and become this little fireball of crazy 😉 Both the good & bad kind, haha.

What are you addicted to? Oh boy, lots of things- coffee, Twisted Tea, salt & vinegar chips, reading, writing, talking, wine, hair, makeup, water, teeth.. lol. I have a lot of addictions, it’s a little sad really.

How do you work through self-doubts and fear? I’ve been through a lot more than one person really should have to go through- and the key words being… “been through”. I made it out onto the other side, and I’m happy, blessed, healthy, and most of all I’m living. Because of that, I remember life goes on, tomorrow is a new day, and life is meant for living not worrying about things. Therefore, I push through. Sometimes alone, sometimes with friends, sometimes with my children, other times with a nice bottle of hard liquor 😉 Either way, I don’t let it get to me, especially for long.

What scares you the most? Well- the obvious things such as death, the loss of a loved one, and anything horrible happening to my children. The not so obvious things include lady bugs, heights, and the unknown.

What makes you happiest? I’d have to say being able to be outside in hot weather while the children play, music going in the background, and either a computer in front of me or a book. It really is the simple things in life.

What’s your greatest character strength? I’m always trying to put a smile on other’s faces, even if for just a moment.

What’s your weakest character trait? So very forgetful, of everything!!!!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? I get made fun of for this one- I’d say California or Alabama. I love the US, and although I love to travel, I couldn’t imagine living in a different country. Oh, and I love sunshine & warmth. Having snow for 6+ months out of the year sucks!!

Tell us about your family? I have the best mom in the world who is married to a great stepfather. My dad passed away 3 years ago, but he was simply amazing! (I was daddy’s little girl). Two daughters, three older sisters, 2 younger brothers- great extended family. It’s large, wonderful, crazy, supportive, talented… and I couldn’t imagine having better people in my life.

How much sleep do you need to be your best? Ahh. I have horrible insomnia but I love sleep. I could go two days straight on 4 hours of sleep, but then I’d sleep for three days I swear lol. I guess this is a hard question to answer. It depends on the day.

If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask? My dad.

What’s your favorite meal? Steak on the grill and a large salad.

What movie do you love to watch? Anywhere But Here – its my go-to movie.

Are you a city slicker or a country lover? Somewhere in the middle. Living in the country my whole life is what I’m used to and I love it- especially raising kids in the country. However, I’m a city girl at heart. When my children are adults, I’m convincing them to move to LA or somewhere with me 😉

How important are friends in your life? Extremely!!! My three best friends have been in my life for well over a decade. I have other close friends that I couldn’t imagine losing.

How many friends does a person need? At least one. But it has nothing to do with numbers.

The Professional questions

Why do you write? Its therapeutic. Its always been a part of my life, more so now than ever.

Have you always enjoyed writing? Yes!

What motivates you to write? The voices inside my head 😉 My thoughts… my stories.

What writing are you most proud of? (Add a link if you like) Illusion. I took a story that popped into my head, did tons of research on the subjects, and had it written in two weeks. It has a lot of my life put into the story, and it also helps other people understand what its like to deal with something such as PTSD, depression, the thoughts/emotions of feeling suicidal and helpless. It’s a story I’ll always treasure deeply.

What books did you love growing up? I liked historical books, honestly. Not even romance ones. My dad loved the history channel, and in class when we had to read something about history, it immediately hooked me. Especially during the eras of the different wars. I also loved Of Mice and Men and Searching for David’s Heart. Those two books I’d read over & over.

Who is your favorite author? I can’t have just one. I saw Colleen Hoover & Jamie McGuire during an interview, and they both made me cry when they told their stories. They’re not just talented writers but also inspiration. Besides them there are just so many, I’d take up half this interview.

What book genre of books do you adore? New Adult, Contemporary Romance, Erotic Romance, Thriller Romance, sometimes Paranormal. As long as it’s a great story line, well written, and has some sort of romance in the book, I’m hooked. I’m not picky.

Is writing a gift or a curse? Gift- most certainly. I’d be lost without it.

What book should everybody read at least once? Reason To Breathe by Rebecca Donovan.

Is there any books you really don’t enjoy? I don’t care for books written in third person (although I’ll read them).

Do you find it hard to share your work? I did at first, and although I still get nervous I’ve come to find out at least one person will love what I write, and its those people I’m writing for, not the critics.

Is your family supportive? Do your friends support you? Absolutely!! Both friends & family do so much. I’d be lost without them!! J

Do you plan to publish more books? Oh yeah, I plan to the rest of my life!

Tell us about your new book? What’s it about and why did you write it? It’s about a girl named Lexi falling in love at a young age and getting pregnant, then her mom sends her away (out of state) to live with her grandmother. She feels as though her family doesn’t love her, so she doesn’t return for 10 years. When she returns, she has to tell her childhood love, Zander, he is unknowingly the father after all these years… two weeks before he is supposed to get married to a seemingly perfect woman. The second Lexi sees Zander, she knows her feelings for him have never changed, but when he finds out the truth, he has a hard time accepting what Lexi did. It’s called Forgive Me for good reasons! I wrote it because it was what was going on in my head. I don’t typically plan my novels, they just come to me as I write.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax? Relax? What is that?!! Uh, I love to read (but don’t have the chance much anymore), and I spend time with my friends & family. I enjoy a drink at night or on the weekend, and talking with friends/family. That about sums it up for me.

Do you have any tips on how writers can relax? Do what you love. Don’t write because you have to, write because you want to. If you want to take a bath, take a bath. You want to go soak up the sun, then do that. If you need a massage to get those back kinks out, pinch your pennies and get a massage!

How often do you write? And when do you write? I make sure to put in a few hours a week. I write when I can and when I want to. I don’t schedule time to write, because I don’t ever want it to feel like a chore. I started writing because I love to write- and I always want to feel this way.

What’s your next project? It’s called Ex Convict. (Well honestly I’m working on three novels at once—Ex Convict, Scarlet Devil & Disturbed Beauty). I write what comes to mind, I can’t help it.

Review – Raw by Belle Aurora

Screen Shot 2014-02-21 at 4.26.35 PM Screen Shot 2014-02-21 at 4.26.53 PM Photos from Amazon.com

Started reading Raw Wednesday night…had to make myself go to bed instead of pulling an all nighter…then decided it would be a good idea to finish it at work the next day. Mistake…hard to explain why you’re crying like a two year old while reading on your iPad at work…then I came home and was so exhausted I fell asleep at 330 pm and didn’t wake up into 130 am…that is what Raw did to me…

My Review

This may seem like a bad review but it’s not. It’s so fucking not. I am in love with this damn book. It spoke to my soul.

Love is a drug and like any drug you will do anything to have it…

Raw oh my good I’m conflicted I’m loving it but I hate it! If that makes sense. It’s like the story of my soul. I get it. Maybe I’m just damaged lol but it brings home the fact that one act can change your life regardless of if you know it or not.

But it’s one of those I can see why ppl hate it hahahaha but it’s so gritty and real all the bad stuff they said I can see it. Hell I’ve lived it. Anyone who’s loved a boy that they knew was bad for them but did anyway even though it went against everything they believed in. Shit is believable. Ppl are too caught up on the sappy happy books, they have a time and place but this shit hits home it’s like my poetry to me. Real and unfiltered. Raw just like the book says. Everything is laid bare and I love it.

Sometimes we want things in life and don’t know how to ask for it. Sometimes we just want someone else to recognize the pieces that are missing within out hearts, our souls. My heart hurt reading this book. It heart for all the times I thought someone had seen me only to realize that it was a lie. Twitch saw Lexi but she didn’t see him but as the reader I saw him.

The part where she talks about the good and bad of their “relationship” is poetic in its explanation. Summed up to what so many live by…”I’ll take the bad just so I can have the good.” So many people stay in a relationship that’s going to open them wide open and pour salt in their wounds just for those small smiles and the unguarded touches. Those moments keep you going and staying even when your head so no. But your heart, your damn bleeding heart says yes. Stay along for the ride because we will get to have that moment on more damn time! Gah, this book is ruining me…

You know it’s bad when you’re lying to your best friend. When you’ve never had secrete before. Is it shame we feel or something else? Love is something that no one can really explain when they feel it. It makes you do things you didn’t know you were capable of doing. And when it’s gone…it takes a part of you right down to your soul and makes you physically sick so you sometimes hang on even when you know you shouldn’t.

The conflict he felt for falling in love even when he wasn’t trying. That’s the love that hits and hurts the hardest. The love you never saw coming.

I get this book so much. Parts could be my life. Knowing someone’s bad for you, they treat you like crap, you swear you’re mad and will never talk to them or you’re gonna give them a piece of your mind, but you see them and everything stops. You just want to get that moment back again. It’s easier to give in then to fight…I get it all to well.

And that song…that damn Maroon 5 song “One More Night,” I can’t even…no words. Perfect…

I love that Twitch is getting attached to someone. In his own way he likes Michael.

And now I’m crying like a newborn baby and I need a blanket and a pillow. I’m done…so done. Why, why, why?? I’m never going to recover from this…

Favorite quote:

“What’s your name?”

“Doesn’t matter. You’ll forget it once I’m gone.”

“No, I won’t.”

Amazing 4 Star Review by Red City Review of Dark Indiscretions

To see the review on their site just click the link!! How awesome! 🙂

Red City Review

‘Dark Indiscretions’ by Shakuita Johnson is a paranormal tale that shifts the generic mold of these kinds of narratives and offers up a new story to bite onto. Jennifer Johnston is a girl struggling with her identity, surrounded by a terrifying family who causes nightmares in all those who encounter them. She is a mystic, a vampyra with the talents of a shape-shifting witch. When her family tries to force her to marry her brother to keep their bloodline pure, she refuses, but this only sets off a sequence of events that causes even greater fears. Meanwhile, two dylias, (commonly referred to as werewolves,) named Jackson and Taylor, who are pack mates and lovers, move forward in life as they live in fear of the mystics. Eventually, the two werewolves reunite with Jennifer, joining forces, aiming to bring balance to their world.

This is an interesting story because it brings up new dynamics that have previously been unexplored in the realm of paranormal fantasy and romance. It was especially refreshing to see two male werewolves in a relationship with one another. The tension in the story builds up from the start, as the reader is introduced to Jennifer and the dysfunctional family that she is a part of. The beginning of the narrative contains a lot of information and at times is confusing, but Johnson builds upon her story and explains all that is unforeseen by the end of the tale. If you are a fan of vampires and werewolves, then this would be a great read for you, as it brings a strong new voice to the already overflowing market of paranormal fiction.

I RECEIVED AN ARC FROM THE AUTHOR FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

REVIEW OF ETERNALLY ALEX:

*I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest reveiw*

*Possible spoilers especially if you haven’t read the first two in the series*

3 out of 5 stars

I’m about 16% in to the book and I think they’ve had sex at least four to five times by now. I love a good sex scene but holy crap! I would much rather have a great story line. Also if I hear the words “it’s all about pleasure” or “you’re fucking fuckable” one more time I might scream! It was said several times in the first two book every time they had sex or he looked at her. Surely James’s vocabulary extends those two phrases. At this point I still believe Alex to be a whiny woman-child. Alex is a naive nitwit and all that drama with James’s mother, she should have stayed out. If the man says he doesn’t want to see the woman that abandoned him she should have agreed. Not get mad because she never had the chance to talk to her birth mother and take it out on James because he’s not interesting in finding out why his mother would walk out on him at six months. I just really don’t like Alex in any of the books. She tries to pressure other people to do things but gets mad if she feels pressured. I just feel like she’s always making James do something HE doesn’t want to do. He just ends up doing because he doesn’t want her unhappy and she doesn’t care about his happiness.

On a good note the bring in James’s mother was intriguing. Even though I found myself wondering what did she want it was enough to keep me reading. Even though I didn’t agree on how Alex pretty much backed James into a corner to meet her, I was interested enough to want to know why she was back all of a sudden. Minor things in the story kept me interested.

I was also given the other two books in this series by the author to read before this one. Overall a pretty good series but not one I would probably read again. I would give the series overall a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a pretty good read to pass the hours but I wasn’t so wrapped up in it that i had to read it NOW. I took a few breaks here and there.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM THE AUTHOR

1- What is your favourite book that you have written?
I love Freeing Alex for no other reason other than it was my first, but really I like them all.

2-What is your favourite book by another author?
The Education of Sebastian and The Education of Caroline – Jane Harvey-Berrick, both of these stayed with me for days.  But I also adore the Black Dagger Brotherhood and could happily re-read and re-read – Sadly Phury was removed as the screensaver on my phone, I now have Rhage! (A girls to dream!)

3-What do you like to do in your spare time when not writing?
My family sails, although we’re all a bit fair-weather, cooking and reading, of course.  Oh, and I love a night out dancing with the girls a few Strawberry Bellini, but no more vodka, not ever again!

4-Is there any authors that inspired you to write?
Lots, but particularly new authors that came from nowhere.

5-Do you listen to music while writing if so who or what genre?
I sometimes listen to music, other times I like total silence. My musical taste is eclectic and ranges from Beethoven to Rizzle Kicks!

6-Have you any upcoming books you’d like to tell us about?
Well, Eternally Alex is now complete and ready to launch – so excited!  I’m aworking on another novel, working title is Never Say Love. It’s Benito’s story, a sort of prequel to Freeing Alex.  It won’t be part of the series, and has been written after I received a number of requests from my readers.  Once that’s done, there is another that is started but was shelved so that I could work on Never Say Love, that’s nothing to do with Alex at all.

7- Tell us some interesting facts about yourself?
·               I’m a true Piscean and have an over active imagination.
·               I’m a Staffordshire girl through and through.
·               I’m not scared of spiders, they all send for me when they find one.

For today’s post I am participating in my VERY FIRST BLOG BOOK TOUR. I will be reviewing 2 out of 3 books in the Beyond the Eyes Trilogy written by Rebekkah Ford. Before the blurbs of each book I will start my review. Hope you enjoy and decided to give this author a try! The links are posted after the review!

These books were gifted to me for a HONEST review and

Review

Beyond the Eyes in the first in a trilogy set. It centers around Paige Reed. Paige has many secrets. She can hear premonitions. She lost her father long ago and it still hurts her heart. During a night out with friends she meets the mysterious Nathan. She feels a deep attraction for him that she doesn’t understand. They start to hang out and Paige is a very insecure selfish girl in many parts of the book. Her behavior sometimes grated on my nerves but it didn’t distract from the story. All in all I was intrigued to continue this story to learn all the little secrets mentioned. Paige and Nathan are apart of a bigger plot. One he starts to reveal to her. She doesn’t react well to a lot scenarios in this book. It felt like she was shutting down at every corner. Paige’s mom is barely home but she calls to check up on her every now and again. It’s a sore spot for Paige. Beyond the Eyes has a lot of teen anguish and petty drama that most teenagers have to endure. But the story focuses on the dark spirits that can somehow possess humans and they have a fascination with Paige. I enjoyed the twists and plots.  It’s well written and drew me in for the moment I started to read. Paige is hit with blow after blow in such a short time frame that you can’t help but feel bad for her. Every time you thing she’s getting a handle on her emotions, something happens to throw her for a loop. Paige also has a huge decision to make about her future. She has fiercely loyal and protective friends in Carrie and Tree (Jack). Paige’s past and present come rushing together and all before her eighteenth birthday. Who’s her friend and who’s her enemy? Paige’s eyes are open something wide in the first installment of the Beyond the Eyes trilogy.

Beyond the Eyes is pretty much everything you would aspect from a YA book but with the supernatural gracefully woven inside to make for a compelling I need to know what happen now page turner. I couldn’t read the pages fast enough. Nathan’s love for Paige touched something deep in my soul and rekindled hopes of one day having someone love me a all consuming as he loved her.

Favorite Quote: From Nathan to Paige

“You know each day with you is like opening a new and better present,” he said. “I know I keep saying this, but you truly amaze me.”

I know what you’re thinking. This is perfect. Nothing can go wrong. HA! Due to certain circumstances Paige’s first love comes into the fold and it wasn’t pretty. At all. Brayden is something else and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Well besides the fact that if I were Paige I wouldn’t be inclined to call him friend. I don’t care how long we had know each other, after his behavior. I’ll let you read it for yourself. I don’t want to give anything away. At least not more than I have to. Oh and I really hope Nathan hands Brayden his ass in one of the next two book. I don’t like him.

Most big questions that arose where mostly resolved or answered. Which was a huge plus for me because I’ve fairly impatient. It could be because it’s a trilogy and questions had to be answered quickly since there weren’t many books to stretch it out.

Rebekkah is a very compelling storyteller and I look forward to reading more of her works. Loved the twist towards the end. Did not see that coming.

4.5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of the supernatural. Plus a bit of history is thrown in.

Beyond The Eyes

Blurb:

Paige knows evil exists in this world, but she never imagined it would want something from her.

In the small town of Astoria, Oregon, surrounded by deep forest and endless mountains, another world thrives . . . a menacing one where dark spirits dwell in soulless humans. Seventeen-year- old Paige Reed lives in this lush, picturesque setting. She’s not your average teen, though she appears to be. Not only is she heartsick, but she’s been receiving cryptic premonitions from a ghostly voice since the age of four. After she hears a haunting message about herself, supernatural occurrences begin to confuse her.

Nathan Caswell seems to peer into Paige’s soul, evoking a magnetic energy between them they cannot deny. They’re connected. But he’s no ordinary guy. He tracks dark spirits and becomes alarmed when they set their sights on Paige.

When two power-hungry malevolent beings make demands on her, she realizes then the fate of mankind rest in her hands. Her world quickly turns inside out where the impossible becomes possible, and in the end she’s faced with a life changing decision that will not only alter her existence but the world as she knows it.

Can a deeply troubled teen overcome her own demons in order to fight those lurking about? With the past and present colliding, Paige must make the ultimate mortal choice. Will it be the right one?

Review

When we last left Paige her grandmother had just told her the horrific thing that she had done to her. She took the power of what was in Solomon’s rings and put it in Paige as a baby. Well she won’t be winning any grandma of the year awards.

Paige is all over the drama in this book with the mood swings. I get she is only 18 a child still really but she’s immortal now and a lot more important things are going on for her feelings to be hurt every other second. She knows there are things she can’t tell her friends for their own good but gets made at Nathan for sometimes doing the same with her. She doesn’t give him a chance to do things on his own terms and jumps to conclusions and reacts before thinking. I never understood those couples who needed to know every aspect of each other’s lives but maybe that’s just my flaw.

With the craziness going on in her life she needs to nut up or shut up. I’m three chapters in and already her childishness is giving me a headache.

That being said, any author that can make me seriously dislike a character is a keeper in my book. I read to escape into another world if I can conjure real emotions for a false world then job well done in my book.

This go round the ‘old one’ and Aosoth – two dark spirits are on two different sides of an upcoming cluster. They both want something from Paige and will do whatever it takes to get her. Then there are the spirits that don’t want Paige to be possessed by either dark spirit. They don’t want to be controlled by anyway and whoever has the power in Solomon’s rings and the incantations can do just that. All the while Paige doesn’t want anyone to know she is what can control them and she wants to get to the incantations.

Then we have Brayden. Ugh still don’t like him and I don’t like how Paige likes to compare him to Nathan. “Brayden would have let me do this.” “Brayden would have let me do that.” Seriously? Brayden violated you and all you’re worried about are petty emotions because Nathan – your boyfriend – wants to protect you and is worried about your safety. Instead of talking to Nathan about your feelings you sneak around with Brayden to valid your own selfish feelings with someone who is more selfish than you. That’s not how love works. You compromise or throw in the towel. You don’t basically cheat on your significant other because you’re not getting your way. Oh and lies by omission are still lies. Rant over. I just don’t like Brayden if you didn’t notice.

We find out who killed Paige’s father and grandmother.  I didn’t think to even put it together. Totally threw one over me and I was even more surprised by who offered this information to Paige.

Ms. Ford has created a remarkable world with characters you love and hate. It’s a new inventive world and the second book is just as good if not better than the first.

Favorite Quote: Nathan to Pagie

“I have over a century in this dark world and both Brayden and you are just fledglings.”

Ha! That about sums it up!
