Excerpt:

Chapter One

“You’re pregnant, Scarlet,” Rift said, a smile beaming from his face. A wave of nausea hit, making Scarlet’s stomach squeeze, her throat tighten, and her head spin a little.

Scarlet’s gaze shifted from Oscar to Rift then back again as her brain worked over what Rift said. Her hand instantly touched her abdomen, half expecting some kind of movement to happen.

“Really?” The one word fell from her mouth before she fully formed a better sentence. Knowing damn well not using protection led to this outcome, but she also wasn’t expecting it to happen so fast or the first time. Damn, I was so not expecting it to happen the first freaking time.

“Your scent changed last night.” Rift smiled at her, trying to calm her down.

“It shouldn’t be a big surprise, Scarlet. You have two strong alphas as your mates.” Oscar puffed out his chest. Scarlet glanced outside toward the barn. All the females Alen changed currently lived in there. Her mates decided it was the safest place for them until Alen was captured. They were all under direct orders not to hunt for the dickhead. Her mates were worried if they placed the females in a home, Alen would kill them. She couldn’t wait for the girls to be out of the barn and in their own home.

Thinking about Ava and her pregnancy brought Scarlet back to earth. Nausea hit like a truck, but she managed to push down the urge to vomit. Changing the topic seemed like a better option than hurling her breakfast up. Her hand rubbed small circles on her stomach while she swallowed hard. Inhaling through her nose and exhaling through her mouth helped her upset stomach.

“Is it safe to go to the store?” She watched both of their bodies instantly tense up. Oscar clenched his fist.

“No,” Oscar said without hesitation.

“I have agreed to stay home till this Alen guy is caught, but I am getting a little stir crazy, and it is my store. I need to make sure my employees are well and everything is in order.” Spending the last two weeks cooped up in the house was driving her insane. Yes, the home was spacious, but she had finished four books on her reading list and cleaned everything in the building including the two sheds out back.

“Out of the question,” Oscar growled.

The letters provide words of encouragement or advice to those just starting out or those who have become discouraged in their art. At Pure Textuality PR, we believe in supporting each other as a community, and we felt this project would be a good way to bring writers together and maybe give some new artists just the right nudge to keep going.

Vision Statement

The Wayne Foundation’s vision is for a world without child slavery. We are dedicated to providing direct assistance to those victimized by exploitation.

Drop in Center

The Wayne Foundation operates the third drop in center in Florida recognized by the Department of Children and Family Services. It is located in Charlotte County Florida, and serves clients throughout Southwest Florida. Our target clientele are young women aged 13-25. Our DIC is equipped to provide daily services that include, but are not limited to: Food, New Clothing, Access to Shower, Media Center, Mental Health Assistance, SNAP/ Medicare Benefit sign-up/renewal, Family Counseling, Education Assistance, and Transportation To and From the Center.

Shelter Services

The Wayne Foundation continues to have the goal of providing shelter services to young women victimized by exploitation or trafficking. This is our primary long term objective.

His jaw tensed when he saw her. For the second time in a day, after a year and half of no contact, he was looking at Julia Fairweather. He wanted to scoop her into his arms. That feeling never really went away. Of course, he knew better than that.

“What the hell do you want?” he asked before he could stop himself.

She pushed him away before. It wouldn’t happen again.

“I don’t want to be alone,” she said, looking up at him with those eyes…those eyes that he had never been able to look at without having his defenses wilt like a goddamn flower.

But not tonight. Not anymore.

“It’s a big city, Fairweather. None of us have to be alone unless we want to.” He winked. “Trust me on that.”

All right. That was mean, but fuck it. Like a coward, she had left him. And when she finally came back, without so much as a call, she treated him like he didn’t matter.

Maybe he didn’t. Maybe that was the thing. He was her Meredith.

She blinked and looked down. “I just wanted to see you,” she said in a small voice.

“That’s rich,” he said, leaning back against the wall. “Am I wrong, or did you not just tell me to stay the hell away from you?”

She looked back up at him, and he wanted so much to grab her again, to kiss her and tell her how hard it had been not knowing where she was or if she was okay. But more than that, he didn’t want to be the pathetic person he felt like for wanting that. And he sure as hell didn’t want her to know he wanted it.

“It’s been a hard night,” she answered.

“It’s been a hard year,” he said. “But I’ve been getting through it.”

“About that,” she answered. “There’s a reason I’m here.”

“I bet,” he answered, moving closer to her. If he was her Meredith, he might as well get the perks out of it. “Why don’t you come inside?”

Thanatos, the God of Death, stood in Tartarus and slowly took it all in. He hated this fucking place. Why was he regulated to live in the depths of hell where no other gods wanted to venture? He should be in Domus with everyone else. Thanatos turned at the barely heard footsteps of Janus, the God of the Future. What did he want now?

“Thanatos, we need to speak immediately,” Janus said.

“What have you seen that can’t wait until I’m in a better mood?” Thanatos asked.

“You’re never in a better mood and this is important. We cannot afford to delay any further. Death is coming for us all.”

“Always with the dramatics. Get on with it then.”

“Hecate, Fenrir, and Oberon have decided something that’s caused the future to shift in their favor. If they succeed in their plans, it could mean the end for us and a new beginning for them.”

“Death is an everyday occurrence. I’m not worried about my end…you on the other hand.”

Thanatos watched as Janus just shook his head back and forth franticly.

“NO. This is different. They are trying to amass armies strong enough to kill even you.”

“Impossible!”

“I’ve seen it.”

Thanatos started to pace. What Janus suggested was ridiculous. He was the God of Death. He could never be killed or weakened. Nothing in the world existed that could control or contain him. Every death made him stronger and there wasn’t a day that went by when someone wasn’t praying for death to claim them.

“What can we do to counter this future? How can we change it back to benefit us?”

“The dead.”

“The dead? What about them?”

“We must have them rise.”

Thanatos closed his eyes and prayed for patience. Sometimes Janus made no fucking sense. Zombies? Really? That was their best option. There had to be something else…something better. He needed a second option on this before he agreed to hear anything else Janus had to say.

“I’m going for a walk. We will discuss this rising of the dead later.”

Thanatos left before Janus could even get a word out. He’d heard enough for the moment. Walking deeper into Tartarus, into the shadows he searched for his father. He found him barely corporal thirty minutes later and waited to be addressed.

Shakuita Johnson is a 31-year-old Psychology major. When she isn’t going to school or working, she is doing what she loves most. Writing. She started writing in middle school. She would write poetry in her room or the middle of the night. Then she was introduced to short stories in a creative writing course her senior year. Her love for paranormal and supernatural started with R.L. Stine Goosebumps books and TV shows, Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles, and Christopher Pike books. She is an avid reader with over 100 books on her bookshelf and 1000 plus on her iPad. She also loved to watch Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer with her mom.

Dark Indiscretions is her first novel and is a Paranormal Thriller. “Whatever, Di. Help if you must, but don’t baby me.”

If Di heard her, she didn’t respond. Not that Giselle needed verbal confirmation; she turned back around and slammed her locker shut without looking, and then stumbled straight into something… someone… hard.

“Oh, sorry,” Giselle mumbled, trying to steady herself. She hadn’t caught the scent until after she looked up and saw who she’d almost knocked down – or, well, collided with. She couldn’t have knocked him down if she’d tried.

He was magnificent. Was every guy in this school a male model? Towering over her at well above six foot, with muscles that went on for days, he was built like a statue with a hard jaw and stone-cold eyes to match. Though his looks were definitely worth paying attention to, it was his smell that had her standing dumbfounded. In all the years since she’d first experienced the change, she had never run into anyone like her. Now, standing here right in front of her was yet another wolf. She’d thought the lingering scent of wet earth might have been left in Di’s wake, but the longer he stood here, looking down at her, the stronger the smell got.

“Do you have a problem?” he asked with a voice that complemented that spectacular body of his. Smooth and deep. Seriously… what a package. Her wolf was definitely at attention and begging for a second to come to the surface for a closer inspection. It was all she could do not to wolf out right there in the hallway, with all the students around to see. Yeah. That would make for a great first impression.

Hiya, everyone… I’m the new girl, and… oh, yeah, and I’m a wolf, too. She might as well tape an old “Kick me” sign on her back; it would be less conspicuous.

While she was practically drooling where she stood, the strange boy, wolf, man –whatever he was – looked positively murderous. “Are you going to stand here all day, or can I get to my locker?”

So much for making a good first impression on him. “Sorry.” Giselle cleared her throat, wanting to say something smart, but for once, she didn’t have the words. She sidestepped sheepishly, and enjoyed the back view of him as he brushed past her to his own locker.

Other Side of Forever

“Allie, why do you hate me so much?” he asked softly as he stared into the sky.

His question took me by surprise. Did he really think that?

“I…I don’t hate you, Ethan.” I stumbled over my words. “I barely know you.”

“Then why do you try so hard to avoid me?”

“I don’t,” I lied, knowing that I did, but not in a mean type of way. I closed my eyes and sighed, wishing he didn’t have to ask so many questions. Couldn’t he just go back to saying nothing at all?

“You do,” he argued. I could hear the change in his voice. He was smiling.

“No. I don’t,” I answered sarcastically. His persistence was pinching my nerves.

“Then look at me,” he challenged.

Without thinking, I turned my head and looked at him. His warm, sweet breath blew against my face as he exhaled. The scent of peppermint. His dark eyes snatched me up and whisked me away. I was lost and unprepared as he drew me deeper and deeper inside him. The walls he created around me were getting higher and harder to climb. Like I had slipped into a trench and I was sinking into the earth.

Ethan pressed forward, attempting to close the gap between us. His lips were so close to mine I could feel the heat emanating from them. And just as our lips were about to brush, the voice in my head begged and pleaded and screamed for me to stop.

Then I turned away.

Author Bio:
Lark Adams is the dark urban fantasy author of the Twisted Eventide series, first novel titled Snow Covered Moon. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Lark received two Associates degrees one in computer aided drafting and another in mechanical engineering. But her true passion and love has always been for the written word.

She’s currently working on her seventh novel, the first in the Sin Eater series – Fall of the Faithful. When not writing or designing mechanical systems she enjoys reading a good novel, drinking a good cup of coffee and letting the words on the page take her to new exciting places.
